What is Small Business Saturday?

Mark your calendars! This year, Small Business Saturday in the UK falls on 7th December 2024. It’s the perfect time to celebrate and support the heart of our communities—small businesses. Whether it’s the charming café down the road, the independent boutique, or the hardworking tradespeople, small businesses are the backbone of our economy.
Let’s dive into why this day is important and how you can play a role in making it a success.
Why Small Businesses Matter
Small businesses are more than just shops and services—they’re the soul of our communities. They bring character and diversity to our high streets and provide jobs for millions. In fact, in 2024 the Federation of Small Businesses reported that small and medium-sized businesses account for a whopping 99.8% of all businesses in the UK. In addition to this, ‘total employment in SMEs was 16.6 million (60% of the total), whilst turnover was estimated at £2.8 trillion (52%).’
But competing with big brands is tough. Big budgets and massive advertising campaigns often push small businesses into the shadows. That’s why Small Business Saturday is so important—it’s a day to shine a spotlight on the local legends who work tirelessly to keep their dreams alive.
The Declining British High Street

The British high street has faced tough times in 2024. Big chains are closing stores, and independent shops are struggling to keep their doors open. Online shopping and rising costs have hit hard. Many local areas are seeing empty storefronts where thriving businesses once stood. It’s a worrying trend, but there’s still hope.
A new report from the House of Lords states, ‘The dominance of retail on high streets is something of the past. Whilst shopping will still be a key feature, there is greater demand and opportunity for restaurants and leisure activities, as well as for more public services, such as health centres and libraries, in town centres.’ It continues to state, ‘Local authorities, communities and businesses need to work together to shape high streets that are reflective of local conditions, adaptable, and resilient.’
Therefore, communities need to start rallying behind their high streets. By shopping locally and supporting small businesses, we can help bring life back to these spaces. Change won’t happen overnight, but every little effort makes a difference.

My Mission: Helping Small Businesses Thrive Online
As someone passionate about supporting small businesses, my mission is clear: to help small businesses get noticed online.

Getting small businesses seen online is more important than ever. With so many customers turning to search engines, visibility can make or break a business. But it’s not just about showing up—it’s about showing up in the right places. That’s where good SEO comes in. By optimising websites, using the right keywords, and creating high-quality content, small businesses can stand out. It levels the playing field against big brands. Plus, a strong online presence builds trust and attracts loyal customers. With the right strategy, even the smallest business can shine online.
So, how do I help small businesses to compete with big brands in the digital space? This is the service I offer:
- SEO Review Services: Helping businesses improve their search engine rankings.
- Quality Content Creation: Crafting engaging content that captures attention.
- Blog Writing: Telling your story to connect with your audience.
- Google Advertising Campaigns: I can set up your campaigns and monitor them for you.
I believe small businesses deserve to be seen. The internet should level the playing field, not widen the gap. With the right tools and strategies, even the smallest player can make a big impact.
Why This Day Matters to Me
I’ve seen first hand how hard small business owners work. They pour their heart and soul into their work, often wearing multiple hats and working long hours. Small Business Saturday is our chance to show them we notice and appreciate their efforts.
Additionally it is my chance to encourage small business owners to reach out and ask for help. You may not have the knowledge, time or know-how to push your business’ website to the fore. That’s where my business services can help.
Likewise, there are other small businesses you may wish to collaborate with. Join local networking events and reach out to other entrepreneurs. In my experience they are always keen to share and work together with you. I’ve made some fantastic connections and great friendships through networking events.
